Sharpening Guillotine Blades

Framers must be very careful not to create teeth on the blades. Teeth are caused mainly by nails or wedges of various kinds especially when pieces of mouldings are recycled.
How often is it necessary to sharpen the blades? There is no easy answer. It depends mainly from how much work the blades have to sustain and from the kind of wood that is cut (hard or soft wood). Usually an average framer should sharpen his blades every 3 or 4 months. However, as soon as teeth start forming the blades should be sharpened.
The unevenness of the edges can be noticed on the cut wood: vertical lines on the wood surface indicate that the blades need to be sharpened. This does not happen with newly sharpened blades, which leave a perfectly smooth surface on the wood. Nevertheless, the blades loose about 1 mm (1/25") each time they are sharpened and when their width is reduced to about 50 mm (2") they will be too thin to be used again.
When a blade of the guillotine is sharpened also the other one has to be sharpened otherwise it will become thinner than the other blade. Therefore it is better to keep a spare pair of blades at hand so that it is still possible to use the guillotine while the blades are sharpened. The blades used as a pair should always remain together. In order to avoid mixing up the blades just keep each pair of blades in separate boxes.

Replacing Guillotine blades.

In order to disassemble the blades it is necessary to loosen the fixing bolts after the cutting block has been brought to its highest possible position. If more space is needed the 2 plastic protections can be removed. The bolts are loosened with the same hexagonal key used for adjusting the height of the cutting block. They have to be placed close-by since they will soon be needed again for assembling the sharpened blades. Since the blades are sharp, they must not be handled with bare hands but only with proper gloves.
Once sharpened, each blades is applied to the cutting block by using only the right and left-hand bolts, leaving out the central bolt. At this stage the bolts are loosely tightened allowing the blades to move and to be fixed in the right place. When fixing the blades these rules should be followed:
• the ends of the blades should meet without leaving any space in between;
• the ends of the blades should not overlap each other;
• the blade edges must be at the same level. It is possible to have a different thickness only on the top part of the blades.
As the blades are moved into their proper place, the bolts are tightened more and more. Only in the end, when the blades are in the desired position, the bolts are tightened to the maximum and the central bolts are fixed.
Another way to change blades is the following. One blade is taken out and replaced by a sharpened blade which is placed in line with the blade still on the cutting block. The bolts are tightened but not strongly. After the second blade has been replaced in the same way and both blades are in the proper position, the bolts are tightened with force.
Once the blades have been replaced it is necessary to make sure that there is no friction with the tracks of the supporting arms. Besides, there must be no space left between the blades and the tracks of the supporting arms. If one of these problems occurs then it is necessary to fix the tracks in a more appropriate position by loosening the bolts that are holding them. The right position of the tracks can be determined by lifting and lowering the cutting block a few times. When the right position has been found, it is enough to tighten the bolts again.
