The thickness of the sand paper is indicated by a number called grain printed on the back of the sheet. The higher the number, the finer the abrasive and smoother the finish.
The roll of sandpaper provided by Rinaldin is available in three different grains.
• Code CVT80 = 80 grain sand paper, that is a thick grain suitable for a first roughing.
• Code CVT120 = 120 grain sand paper, that is medium grain suitable for an intermediate sanding.
• Code CVT180 = 180 grain sand paper, that is a fine grain is suitable for the definite finishing of the surface.
If you want a more polished finish, you must use the 0000 steel wool (code D51).
The sand paper can be used for various jobs :
• Sand the rough wood of the frame.
• In gilding it can be used to smooth the gesso in some places where you can not use abrasive pads.
• It can also serve to smooth the sharp edge of the glass plates.
