The Charbonnel inks for etching consists essentially of a pigment that is crushed and incorporated with a binder to allow the ink to adhere to the support.
The pigments can be of mineral, organic or synthetic origin. Recently almost all the pigments are obtained synthetically.
The binder used by Charbonnel ink is always the polymerized linseed oil that turn only slightly yellow with aging.

CHARBONNEL INK CHARACTERISTICS
• High colouring power due to the high pigment percentage contained in the Charbonnel inks.
• The drying time depends on the viscosity and type of pigment. To reduce the drying time it is advisable to mix some linseed oil to the ink before the application and to heat the plate (especially in the winter).
• As for oil colours, the Charbonnel inks dry off by oxidation. But unlike oil colours, they dry off in less time because they generally have lower thickness.
In addition, the dryness time is speeded up by the colour absorption provided by the paper of the print. On average, complete dryness can be achieved in 15 days.
• The covering power varies depending on the pigment used. Some inks are opaque, others less, others are almost transparent. The covering power of the various inks should be kept in mind especially when using more than one plate for the same work of art.
• All Charbonnel inks are mixed together.
• The Charbonnel inks can be kept for years in their tubes or in their cans. If the parchment paper that holds the ink in the cans is damaged, you must replace it to avoid oxidation. If you want to keep a mixture of several inks, it must be isolated in a completely airtight container. If the conservation time is limited, it is sufficient to protect the mixture with parchment paper or close the mixture into a glass container.
