Le lanceur de couteaux Matisse - French painter, sculptor and designer, born in 1869 at Le Cateau, died in 1954 in Nice. After graduating in law, Matisse turned to painting, studying first at the Academie Julien and then at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His painting was influenced by various contemporary trends but, above all, by impressionism and Cezanne. In 1905 he was one of the founders of Fauvism. His work was distinguished by the use of bright, pure colours and simple, condensed forms. In 1908, he founded his own school of painting. In 1919 he finally won public recognition. For him, colour was always a "living chord of colour... a harmony analogous to musical composition".
